'Unagi No Nedoko' - Machiya House Features
This is a traditional Japanese house located right along the Shirakawa River.
This Kyoto house is built long and deep, with a narrow frontage. From the kitchen area, you can see how far the rooms stretch back. These styles of Japanese houses are compared to a specific animal.
This architectural style is known as “unagi no nedoko” – which can be translated to a bed for an eel. Many houses were built in this style, as there was limited space in Kyoto. In addition, during the Edo period, townspeople were taxed based on the size of their home’s frontage, so as a way to avoid paying high tax, they simply built homes that were long.
