All About Machiya'Wagasa' Inspired Design - Machiya House Features

“Wagasa” are traditional Japanese umbrellas, made of natural materials such as Japanese paper, bamboo and wood. Originally, “wagasa” were not like the typical umbrella that we use today, but were much larger – almost like a canopy – and were designed to be kept open at all times. An attendant would follow after a high-ranking figure whilst carrying a ‘wagasa’ to not only provide shade, but also as an amulet against evil spirits, and symbol of power.
These days, wagasa are rarely used on rainy days, but its unique design & texture are still loved and can be found as covers for lighting and interior decoration as shown here in ‘Suo-an’ Machiya House.
