Even the ceilings have the most delicate of details in traditional Japanese houses.
Look up at the ceiling of this machiya house to admire the ‘ajiro tenjo’ (wickerwork ceiling). Made by weaving together thin strips of bamboo, each strip is carefully woven by hand to create a three-dimensional effect.
There are various ways to weave this ‘ajiro’ design – the one pictured here is the ‘yabane’ style of weaving. It represents the feathers attached to an arrow, and is an auspicious pattern. Be sure to look up at the ceilings of different traditional Japanese architecture when you get the chance!
