‘Yotsuki’ machiya house: a renovated traditional holiday house (vacation rental) located in downtown Kyoto. This charming vacation rental is conveniently located near Omiya Station, giving you direct access to the historical Gion neighborhood, lush bamboo forests of Arashiyama, and an easy walk to Nijo Castle.

The exterior of this machiya house features earthen walls and a decorative circular window known 'shitaji mado.' This circular design is not only a motif that is reminiscent of the moon, but in Japanese culture is closely associated with positive concepts such as "en" (縁, connection) and "wa" (和, harmony).

Step inside to discover modern design with traditional Japanese elements. You'll find 'Gotenjo' ceiling patterns similar to those at Nijo Castle, bamboo woodwork, and original artwork featuring traditional karakami techniques. On the 1F, a shoji sliding door offers privacy and leads to a cozy sleeping alcove with a queen-size bed. Upstairs, large windows brighten the staircase that leads to the master bathroom and Japanese tatami room. The Japanese-style tatami room can serve as a relaxing space or an additional bedroom, accommodating up to 3 guests on futon bedding.

A little background on how ‘Yotsuki’ earned its name: A combination of “four seasons” (yotsu) and “moon” (tsuki), reflecting the beauty of Kyoto’s seasons illuminated by moonlight. The name ‘Yotsuki’ also invites guests to experience Japan’s elegant changing seasons and appreciate nature’s beauty. It embodies the Japanese concept of “tokiyo-jisetsu,” highlighting life’s constant changes and emphasizing the transient yet cyclical nature of time in Japanese aesthetics.

Traditional Japanese Architecture 'Yotsuki' is a renovated traditional Japanese machiya townhouse, tucked away in a small alley in central Kyoto. This classic Kyoto-style house has been part of the neighborhood for nearly a century. The exterior features typical machiya elements, including 'kawara' roof tiles, bamboo wickerwork in the "yatsume-ami" style, and a "Shoki-san" figurine, a traditional guardian deity that sits atop Kyoto townhouses.

Seating Area In the seating area, you can admire classic Japanese architectural details. The space above the sofa showcases intricate bamboo wickerwork in the "yatsume-ami" (eight-eye weave) style and a ceiling that blends bamboo with the 'gotenjo' ceiling style. Above the sofa, original artwork incorporates traditional Japanese 'karakami' paper techniques.

To make a request for a specific bedding set-up, you must contact MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN at least 2 days before your check-in date. Up to 2 children (5-years-old and younger) staying under our “Children’s Policy” will be required to share a bedding with another guests.

Is this a hotel in Kyoto?: No, this is not a hotel in Kyoto. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday homes (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Kyoto!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday homes, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
