‘Kiyu’ machiya house: a renovated traditional Japanese holiday house (vacation rental) with over 100 years of history is located a short distance from UNESCO World Heritage Site Nijo Castle. To get to this charming machiya house, you’ll walk through the lively Sanjo Shopping Arcade, which also has a history of over 100 years. The shopping arcade is lined with over 180 restaurants, cafes, shops, bakeries, supermarkets, and more.

Turn down a side street, away from the hustle & bustle of the shopping area to find ‘Kiyu’ machiya nestled amongst a row of traditional Japanese homes. The entrance opens up to high ceilings & natural light illuminating the space. The 1F living-dining room is a spacious area surrounded by traditional ‘yukimi shoji’ sliding doors. Just behind the sliding shoji doors is a full kitchen, washing machine, and luxurious bathroom.

On the 2F are 2 bedrooms: a western-style bedroom with 2 double-size beds, and a classic tatami room that can accommodate up to 2 guests on futon beds. The double bed can sleep up to 2 guests per bed.

A little background as to how ‘Kiyu’ earned its name: There are 2 Japanese kanji characters that make up the name ‘Kiyu’: 葵 (‘ki’ – the hollyhock flower) and 結 (‘yu’ – to tie together). The hollyhock leaf (also known as ‘aoi’) has been an important symbol of Kyoto city since the Heian Period. It was thought to ward off natural disasters & was also the family crest of the Tokugawa Clan, a powerful shogunate family that ruled Japan during the Edo Period (1603-1867). Nijo Castle was built as the Kyoto residence of the Tokugawa shōguns! With this in mind, we hope that during your stay, you’ll appreciate the “tie” to the history & culture of Kyoto city that this machiya house has.

As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Kyoto!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
