Steeped in over 130 years of history, ‘Izuki’ machiya house stands proudly on Shomen-dori street, known for its impressive wooden temple entrance.

As you slide open the lattice wooden doors, you'll step into a spacious interior that seamlessly blends traditional Japanese architecture with modern comforts.The 1F features a quintessential machiya design, incorporating a 'doma' floor that unifies the living room, dining area, and fully equipped kitchen. Gather around the dining table to enjoy local cuisine or plan your adventures to easily accessible sightseeing attractions such as Nijo Castle, the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, the Gion area, and more.

Enjoy the tranquil beauty of the Japanese-style tsuboniwa garden, visible from the bathroom and living room. The 2F offers two separate bedrooms: a traditional Japanese-style tatami room accommodating up to 3 guests on futon bedding, and a Western-style room with 2 double beds for up to 4 guests.

A little background on how ‘Izuki’ earned its name: The name ‘Izuki’ is inspired by the Japanese phrase “出づる” (izuru), meaning “to emerge” or “to set out.” It reflects the idea of embarking on a joyful journey, particularly as one passes through the wooden Somon gate of Nishi Honganji Temple, located just steps from the machiya house.

Neighborhood Located just steps from Nishi Honganji Temple, in a lively "temple town" (monzen-machi). Since the temple's relocation in 1591, local businesses have catered to visitors with Buddhist goods, accommodations, and dining options. The main street, which 'Izuki' is found on, is still lined with shops offering prayer beads, altars, priestly robes, and more.

Located Near Kyoto Station ‘Izuki’ is a renovated traditional Japanese house that has been a part of this historic Kyoto neighborhood for over 130 years. This house features the classic machiya layout known as “unagi no nedokoro.” When you slide open the entrance doors, the machiya extends back, creating a spacious and inviting atmosphere.

Dining Area & Living Room The 1F is an open-concept area that seamlessly connects the dining area, kitchen, and living room. This space was originally the ‘doma’ of the machiya house, featuring earthen flooring that served as a transitional area between the outdoors and indoors.

Up to 2 children (5-years-old and younger) staying under our “Children’s Policy” will be required to share a bedding with another guests.

Is this a hotel in Kyoto?: No, this is not a hotel in Kyoto. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday homes (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Kyoto!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday homes, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
