'Shoji' Windows and Doors - Machiya House Features
Before glass windows were introduced to Japanese architecture, shoji (sliding wood framed screen fixtures) were used to act as windows and doors. As you can imagine, it was revolutionary at the time, as the translucent white paper that covered the shoji was able to brighten up the room with diffused light – all while keeping out the dust, cold, wind, etc.
As you can see from our traditional Japanese homes, there are many different styles of ‘shoji’ screens. Some have parts that slide up & down, while others slide left to right. When used right outside of a garden, it provides you with the most relaxing and atmospheric view!
