‘Akeiro’ machiya house: a renovated traditional Japanese holiday home (vacation rental) located in a neighborhood that exudes the retro atmosphere of Japan’s Taisho Period (1912-1926). Around the corner from Kyoto's Kamogawa River, you’ll be within walking distance to the historical Gion area & lively downtown Shijo area, with convenient access to Kiyomizu Temple, Kenninji Temple and more.

This 2-story machiya townhouse features exposed ceilings that showcase the original wooden structure. Enjoy a relaxing stay here with up to 6 guests. The 1F living room, kitchen, and bathroom are decorated with ‘akeiro’ (scarlet red) decorative tiles, a traditional Japanese color that has been revered since the Heian Period. The large bathroom features a luxurious waterfall shower head and a view of a tsuboniwa garden. Relax in the sunken ‘horigotatsu-style’ sofa to enjoy a meal with family & friends during your stay.

On the 2F there are 2 western-style bedrooms: one with 2 double-size beds, and the other with 2 single-size beds and a sofa. For your convenience, the 2F is equipped with an additional shower room & bathroom, making this machiya house ideal for short to long-term stays.

A little background as to how ‘Akeiro’ machiya house earned its name: A traditional color revered since the Heian period (794–1185) this traditional Japanese townhouse is decorated with a deep scarlet red throughout it’s interior design. This specific shade of red is known as ‘akeiro,’ but during the Heian Period, was known as “Omoi no Iro (思いの色),” which translates to a “color of great emotion”!
